I like yoga but I feel so demotivated when I see others so good at yoga. How can I get over this?

Great question. I have 5 ideas for you in the bullet points below. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others. It something we seem to automatically do, to gauge where we “fit” among others.
Try taking that attention and focus, and direct it inwards. What are the qualities you admire in the people you are watching? Why is this important to you? Do you have the potential to cultivate these qualities in yourself? I’m sure you do have this potential. I have no doubt we are all going to get better with time. It’s inevitable. But we have to do the work and show up for the progress to happen.
I felt the same demotivated way, when I was learning to boulder (indoor rock climb without a harness) and couldn’t do the hard problems straight away. I just wanted to succeed and get it in my first attempt. I didn’t want to keep “failing”. Even though, I knew it takes time to build up the tendon strength, muscles, techniques and endurance to progress up to the more difficult problems.
So, I changed my focus. I set a goal to make 15 attempts on any bouldering problem instead of having to succeed on every attempt. By shifting my focus to trying, I got a bigger sense of satisfaction and was motivated to keep trying. So explore something similar when approaching yoga, try focusing on just showing up to class and practicing yoga that suits your body and mind.
Here are 5 practical options to get you back on track:
- Join a 4-10 week beginner’s yoga course with ideally the same teacher, learn the basics well. Practise with a teacher you like. Getting feedback from someone with experience who you trust will help more than guessing what you need to work on based on what other students are doing in the class.
- Start to become aware of when you begin to compare/focus on someone else’s progress. Instead compare your progress against Krystina. Someone you know well. Krystina yesterday, a year ago, 5 years ago.
- Try different styles of yoga, and try different teachers until you find that teacher who resonates with you.
- Try and find classes, with smaller group sizes, and move at a gentler pace so there is time for your body to get familiar with the movements.
- Try private yoga with a teacher, so the practice is completely focused on you (if you are financially able to)
